Before the summer season ends we all want to enjoy the beach and have fun in the sun. While we all have in mind the need to protect our skin and apply plenty of sun protection to our bodies. We tend to overlook and forget about the damage that the sun does to the outside cover of our hair strands causing your hair to become discolored, feel dry and brittle, and appear to have split ends, thinning, and frizziness.
Here are some tips to protect your hair from the sun:
1. Rinse your hair: Before stepping into the pool you should make sure that your hair is wet, this will help your hair absorb less chlorine. The pool contains chlorine that is extremely powerful that will kill germs in the water, with the added combination of high temperatures and the sun the chemicals will cause your hair to strip which is why your hair may tend to lighten up during the summer season.
2. Avoid Certain Products: During the summer months you should avoid products based with high percentages of peroxide, alcohol, and lemon as they will create your hair strands to dry out faster.
3. SPF: Create your own SPF for you hair by mixing 4 teaspoons of UV protection and half a cup of water into a spray bottle. Spritz all over your hair and reapply as you would when applying UV protection to your body.
4. Moisturize: Keep your hair well moisturized by placing conditioner in your hair without rinsing while you are in the sun. This is one of my favorite things to do, I look for a conditioner that has extra moisturizer in it to maintain my hair hydrated.
